No, we don't recommend to machine wash our rugs, we always advice to either vacume it regularly or go for a professional cleaning twice in a year. While many people have had good results using cold water and gentle wash cycle when washing rugs in their machines, but we do not recommend it. When a rug is wet it becomes very heavy and could damage your machine. If you hang a wet rug up to dry it could lose its shape and it cannot be restored. If your rug becomes wet it should be dried flat in a well ventilated area, turned over often, and kept out of direct sunlight

Life of a rug depends on many factors like, which rug you are using and where you are using it. Some rugs last upto 20 or even more than that when you use them properly.
